The Monastiraki Flea Market was another highlight—an eclectic maze where I found everything from vintage souvenirs to handcrafted jewelry. I couldn’t leave Athens without trying its famed street food—savoring a warm, crispy souvlaki wrap while watching the sunset over the city, with the Acropolis glowing in the distance.
Santorini: A Picture-Perfect Island Escape
After soaking in the history of Athens, I made my way to Santorini, one of Greece’s most famous islands. Known for its iconic white-washed buildings, blue domes, and breathtaking sunsets, Santorini lives up to every bit of its reputation. I arrived by ferry, and as the island came into view, I was struck by its dramatic beauty. I visited the ancient Temple of Demeter, a peaceful site tucked away among the island’s verdant hills, and the famous Portara—the massive marble doorway that stands at the entrance of the harbor, a remnant of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo.
Crete: A Journey to the Heart of Greek Culture
My final stop was Crete, Greece’s largest island, known for its diverse landscapes, ancient ruins, and rich culinary traditions. Crete has a distinct identity, shaped by its history as the cradle of the Minoan civilization, and I was excited to explore its many layers. My first stop was the Palace of Knossos, the legendary archaeological site near Heraklion. Walking through the ruins of this ancient Minoan palace, I could almost imagine the hustle and bustle of life thousands of years ago—intricate frescoes, grand courtyards, and mysterious labyrinthine passages.
